So I've spent 100 days working on my link directory. It's been a lot of work. I had about 160 links before I started this blog and now I have 877. My visitor count when I started the blog was 16, 415 and now it is 9000 more, and I can see from my logs that a lot of those 9000 visitors came from my shiny new links, and will likely continue to do so for some years.

I created a new page today for sites who's main product was jewelry boxes. I have a few jewelry box sites as link partners and they are here and there all over my directory. Not so good if that is what one of my visitors is looking for once they have finished looking at my site.

I didn't move the existing ones over. I think I want to get the structure in place, have hopefully all the categories I think my visitors will be interested in and then go through the old pages page by page and move what should be moved around to sort things out properly.

When I logged in this morning there were 3 emails from people who had filled in my online form to say they would like to exchange links with me.
I think the same person may have filled in all three forms, though the emails were all different.
I look at the first site. Nice jewelry site, but I can't find a links page - I always start at the home page to check out whether it would be likely that one of their guests would find the links page and find my site if that was what interested them.
Then I check the form. The link they had placed to me was on a different site. A site just with pages of links labelled 1 2 3 etc.
Well, no thankyou! I delete that email and read the next one. Same thing!
Delete that email.
The third email is from the site where my link was on the second site asking for a link exchange.

I'm still getting into the swing of things after my holiday. I put up a pile of new pages on magnetic dots today and I have a pile more just about ready to go up, so I didn't spend a lot of time on exchanging links. Hopefully by next weekend I'll be caught up with my site's backlog and can concentrate more on this. I think my directory is beginning to take shape nicely. It's beginning to be a good resource for visitors to my site once they have done everything they want to do there.

I'm back after a 2 week holiday, raring to go!

I've been reorganising my link directory some. Mostly the weight loss pages. Too many links on the main weight loss page. So now I have 10 link partners on weight loss two. I hope I didn't lose one while I was doing this. I have a bad feeling that I did lose one of the Hoodia ones. Hope I'm wrong! I had 4 Hoodia sites I thought. I like Hoodia. It's natural and it does help to stop one feeling hungry.

It's really hard to stay on top of what's happening when you try to do a major project like this Link Exchange. I have an excel sheet with hopefully all the sites in my resource directory and most of the sites that i have looked at recently. I keep a column for status -
p is for partner
a is for invited
x is for i don't want to link with them.

mostly I have stripped off the www from the urls and sorted by the url's alphabetically. Then hopefully I can see if I have already visited an url.

I keep a list of 'new to check' in another spreadsheet then when I'm ready colour the font of those red or blue and add them to the main spreadsheet. Sort by alphabetical order again, delete those that I've already visited, then go visit the coloured ones that are left.

Once those are all visited, then I colour the fonts all black again. Then rinse and repeat.

I found another Alexander Technique site that I wanted to ask for a link exchange with today. He had his e-mail address as an image (to prevent spammers I'm sure - I did that for a while until I discovered that my site server had several free anti spam programs on it just for the enabling of them so now I use spam assasin and on two email addresses that got really bad quantities of junk mail I used box trapper spam trap which means that the sender has to verify that they sent an email.)
Well, his email bounced. It was at yahoo.ca so I wondered whether he really meant yahoo.com. But no. That bounced too.
How is his website helping his business if somebody can't email him? At least he'd do better to have no email than an email that doesn't work!

I spent some time going though some of my existing link pages that were becoming too crowded. I moved some links from them onto other pages and I deleted quite a few who hadn't got back to me about a link exchange.
Over the months my standards have changed! looking at thousands of websites does that for you. Sites that I thought were good 4 months ago, today I just think some of them are OK, and some I don't think are up to my standards!

I had a weird e-mail from someone today who called himself 'Nobody' and his email was from host.cheapwebhostingservices.com
He told me that I had been refused link exchanges with 6 jewelry sites. At first I thought that the letter was genuine, but when I chcked my directory none of the sites were in it, and I do always put a site in my directory before I ask for a link.
So I e-mailed one of the sites and asked if the e-mail was for real or a hoax.

Today I was mostly trying to find link parners in the acupuncture area. It's very related to one part of magnetic therapy - Using magnetic dots (sometimes called Neos or magnetic bandages - NdFeB Neodymium Magnets for Acupuncture Points)

For people who don't like using needles but do want one of the benefits of acupunture, taping one of those strong little magnets to an acupunture point has the same effect.
I found 4 acupunture sites to ask for a link exchange and another natural medicine site that covered acupuncture as well, but I didn't put it on th acupuncture page but on the natural medicine page.

I had to add a page to my link directory today for bridal jewelry - dragonstonemagnetics.com/links/jewelry-bridal.htm. Wedding rings just wasn't right for Anna Bellagio bridal jewelry. Someday I should sort out my directory again. I know I have a link partner in there for bridal tiaras - and very beautiful they were too. I can't remember how I classified that one!

Today I came accross 3 sites that were quite unreadable - they were all from practising hypnotists I believe and had most probably all been made from the same template. The writing sat on top of other writing so nothing could be read!
Probably if I had opened up Internet Explorer I could have seen what they were about, but I was using firefox and decided that if they had wanted me to be able to read their site it would have been legible in whatever browser I chose to use.

I wanted link exchanges with more hypnotists. But I wanted link exchanges where if visitors to my site wanted to visit them they would actually be able to find out something about that fascinating subject! So no link invitation from me for those 3 sites!

Well, lots of advantages to visiting lots of health websites, for instance I'm sure my own health will improve. Today one of the sites I visited was about beta sitosterol. I'd never heard of it before. It naturally occurs in several plants and is in especially good supply in soybeans, peanuts, rice bran and wheat germ.
Beta sitosterol has a structure similar to cholesterol and just taking this will lower your cholesteral by quite a few points. Vive la Soya Bean!

I chose not to invite a link from that site tho :(

I have been trying to only request link exchanges with people who some of my customers are likely to want to visit and who are also likely to send customers my way. So just people with well organised link pages and not too many links on a page.

Now I would consider my business Alternative health rather than Jewelry, though it certainly is mostly magnetic bracelets that I sell. But clearly most of visitors who are arriving at my website from reciprocal links are coming from jewelry sites. Not sure that I understand why that would be. I think that about half my links are jewelry and half health related.

Today I realized that I was going to the same sites over and over. I had an excel file of sites I wanted to checkout and I'd put them in reverse alphabetical order. Trouble was, some had www. in fromt of their site, some had http://www. and some had nothing. so really there were 3 alphabetical lists. Once I finished going through the www ones, the next ones were sometimes repeats.
So I spent a couple of hours and removed all the www's and had http://www's. and put them back into alphabetical order.
Tomorrow I'll start going though again and hopefully won't hit so many repeats.

Yesterday I couldn't log in to blogger. I guess too many people were updating their blogs over the weekend. Oh well, try to catch up today.

I have a form on my website which people can use to apply to have a link exchange with me.

Someone filled it in a few weeks ago and is now trying to insist that I add his site to my directory!

Well, I don't think that that is going to happen. I can't see getting any visitors from the links page he has on his site.

I guess he must be new at this. Life would indeed be easy if all one had to do was ask for a link exchange. But for one reason or another most of the people one asks don't want to exchange links. Maybe one or two out of 10 do very much want to increase their traffic that way.

And the other side of it is that for every 10 websites one looks at, one doesn't want to exchange links with 8 or 9 out of 10 for one reason or another. Maybe they have 500 mixed theme links on one page and you don't think anyone is ever likely to find yours in the jumble. Maybe you don't like where their site is coming from. Maybe it's hard to even find their links page and you figure that if you are looking for it and can't find it, how are their visitors going to go there and look.

So that's why link exchanging takes so much time when you want to do a good long term job of it. Look at 100 pages. Invite 10 of them to be link partners. Get accepted by 1.

I decided that I didn't have a suitable Links page for 'Health Advice' and yet I think it would be a subject that most people visiting my site would be very interested in, so I created a new page for it.
I seem to have so many health related categories! Really one of them should have been right! I guess that 'Health and Wellness' would be a not too bad category match, but that page is already full.

In the shuffle I emailed a link exchange request without actually putting up the site in my link directory. I don't think I've done that before, but on the other hand it's possible. Now everything is fixed!

I've been listing the visitor count to my homepage because that is where most of my link partners are pointing their links to me at the moment. Looking at my stats, almost twice as many people reach my site through other pages. I think that a lot of that would be because they have saved that as a favourite.
The wholesale page is a big entry page - I'd guess that was from customers and potential customers. The two blogs get a good share of people arriving at them as their entry. And my free dragon wallpaper at dragonstonemagnetics.com/DragonHoardWallpaper.htm is also getting a good chunk of fresh visitors - I have to think that people are linking to it or telling their friends about it because they like it. I've never done anything much to try and promote it. When I started selling some of my products on Ebay I sold that wallpaper for 1c to get lots of good feedback. I created it at that time, then later decided that I'd make that page accesible because I had no intention of selling it any more and I really liked it myself so why not let other dragon lovers have it too.

Well, I'm certainly glad to have a link exchange with Steve! This one link looks like a little goldmine for me.
When I look at the page that my link is on in his site walshbrothers.co.uk/links/Wholesalejewellery.html - it's not at the top of the page and it doesn't stand out in any way from the other links there.
I think it's just that he has built a very good link directory so people use it to find what they need in the way of wholesale jewelry etc.

Typing 'wholesale jewelry' into google will not likely get you a good collection of sites that actually sell jewelry wholesale. it's get you jewelry sites who happen to have a link to a wholesale jeweler on their link page or something like that more than half the time.

I do wish that one could tell the search engines that one was either looking for information or looking to buy. A little extra couple of buttons - Google search - I'm feeling lucky - I want to buy - I want info.
The search engine that first does that is going to be my default search engine! I probably want info more frequently than a store, but the ability to choose between commercial or info sites would be sooo sweet.

So it ends up that if you want to find wholesale jewelry sites it's better to find a good link directory like Steve's and follow those links which are all to sites that actually sell wholesale jewelry.

Two months into this linking campaign and I'm finally beginning to see results. 395 more unique visitors this month than last month, and last month had 251 more visitors than the month before.
Not a huge quantity of visitors for all the hours of work I've put into this campaign, but they are good quality visitors and my sales are going up nicely. And hopefully the increased # of visitors from these links will always be there without much further work from me.

I've been trying to keep my link directory very focused. Just sites on alternative medicine, health, jewelry and wholesale pretty well because those are all very closely related to what my site is about. Also I've tried to subdivide those into smaller sections, each with it's own page.
It amazes me how many people just hodgepodge a total mix of everything on one links page. I came across another one today. A great site. I liked what they were doing. Then I looked at their links page and there were 900+ mixed and muddled up links. They were a healthsite. The links were for lots of things that I couldn't see would have anything to do with health. Real estate for instance.

Long day for me today with Ebay university. I don't feel I learnt a great deal there. They spent most of the time on very basic stuff. A lot of attendees didn't have an ebay account or a paypal account, so probably half of the day was spent on how to get those and how to fill in the most basic of selling forms.

I don't think it's hard to join Ebay! The hardest part for me was to find an identity that nobody else had already chosen. Also joining paypal is pretty easy. And I think a 10 year old could fill out the form to create an auction.

Maybe the most useful thing I learnt was to always research any item that I was thinking of selling in Ebay. That way one could not only check the price a similar item sold at, but also the listing category and a good way to describe that particular item.

The guy giving most of the presentation was amusing. He had a lot of anecdotes about his own good experiences selling on Ebay. But at the end of the day I wondered why I had gone!

Somebody wrote back to me a long letter about why my links page wasn't good enough for him. He says my page wasn't indexed. Which is strange because it was indexed last time I checked. And 'You got too many
supplementals and omitted results on the site:command at G.' Now he may have just as well written to me in Chinese! I would have understood it just as well! What the heck does that mean? If anyone could translate for me I'd appreciate it.

I looked at 76 jewelry sites today to find 9 that I wanted to request a link exchange with. Mostly there was nothing at all wrong with the site, but the ones I didn't ask to exchange links with just had one link exchange page and it was too full for my taste! One of them had #'s before each link. The #'s went up to about 370. I just can't see anyone going through 370 links and clicking on each one.
I don't know why they do it that way. It doesn't cost any more to have a few extra pages and to classify the links into some order. Jewelry is very easy to classify on the whole. A lot of sites specialize in diamonds or silver or beads etc.

I was checking my existing links again today and came across this page opaltreasures-rainbowdreams.com which shows that 37 people have clicked on my link to get to my site from it. That's not too bad. It hasn't been there very long.
There are 9 other links on the page. 8 of them are jewelry and 1 is Professional Astrology Reports. Guess which one had the most clicks. The astrology one beat out everyone else with 72 clicks! You'd think people were looking at links on a jewelry site to find more jewelry, but I guess that just isn't so.

In all watches, the power must be transmitted from the main energy source (eg mainspring) all the way to the hands. This power transmission takes place through many rotating parts. In a mechanical wristwatch, whenever there is a rotating component, there is friction. This friction reduces the watches accuracy and takes away valuable energy the watch needs to keep running.To minimize friction, watches are fitted with synthetic rubies on most gear pivots. The ruby is lab created, is generally round, and has a small hole in it for one end of the gear to fit in. The gears itself rotates in these rubies. The rubies contain a small drop of lubrication to further minimize friction.
To simply transfer energy from the mainspring to the hands, about 17 jewels are needed. Many high quality watches use 17 jewels. There is a common misconception that more jewels is better. This is not true. More jewels only means there are more rotating parts and the movement is more complex. For instance, a chronograph complication adds more rotating parts. The basic Poljot 3133 mechanical chronograph movement is 23 jewels; the same movement with a moonphase indicator is 25 jewels.

It was a good seminar over the weekend. Long hours, especially on Saturday when it started 8.30 in the morning and finished at 10pm.
I think they have convinced me to have a faster loading home page. apparantly 50% of people in the US still have dial up connections for the internet. I had no idea that that was so. I don't know anyone with dial up!
They didn't talk about links much. It was mentioned here and there,but not emphasized. Basically the angle they were coming from on the whole was that once one was established one would have an affiliate program and the affiliates would naturally link to your site. They went into getting super affiliates in great detail. No use for me! With wholesale there just isn't the margin to pay affiliates 30% or whatever.

I frequently hear that one shouldn't have flash and other elements on one's home page that the search engines can't read! If you check out my home page at dragonstonemagnetics.com you can see that I clearly don't agree with this!
The dragon at the top of the page is breathing fire and smoke and telling you to 'take good care of yourself'
Well, of course a search enginge can't see this. but is a search engine going to buy any of my wares? I don't think so!
Then I have my magnetic dog joke. The dog's owner is asking him if he ate all the refridgerator magnets again. He's stuck to the fridge :) Again, probably not visible to any search engine, but a search engine likely doesn't have a sense of humour in any case.
Then I have my beautiful young lady bot Magnetia who greets all my visitors. She works 24/7 to welcome those who come to my site. You'd think that a bot would understand another bot, but I rather think that the search bots don't understand spoken English.
Finally I have 'The birthday Party' a little flash presentation. The princess is sobbing because she has no goifts to give her father on his birthday, so St George the dragon comes to her aid and takes her to a local wizard who has a lot of valuables. She gets her dad a magnetic bracelet of course.

Someday I may take some of it off. I realize that the site would load faster with less graphics on the page. But for now I think the home page loads fast enough and lots of people tell me that they enjoy some of this stuff. That's enough for me.

I'm wondering how to go about reorganising some of the older pages in my directory. At first I just had a page for 'wholesale' and a few pages for different types of jewelry and health related sites.

I was thinking today about whether one should link exchange with one's close competitors. I decided that one should.
In one way, I might lose some customers, but equally I might gain some. Anyone coming from a wholesale magnetic products site has to be interested in what I have to offer.

I only sell fairly low cost magnetic bracelets - They all retail for $10. To do that I haven't compromised on the strength of the magnets, but on the material that the bracelets are made from.
Apart from the magnetic hematite bracelets mine are all on copper or alloy with gold or silver plate on them.
Most other wholesalers of magnetic products also sell stainless steel bracelets. I'm sure they will last longer, but how long do you want to wear the same bracelet for? Aren't you ready for a new style after a year or two.
Also some other manufacturers have solid gold or solid silver bracelets. Very nice! And a very nice price too.
The way I see it, different customers are looking for different things. Someone may have gone to their web page but be looking for lower cost stock. Someone might have come to my page but only been interested in expensive product. We should both win by sending those visitors on to the other related site!

Reading around on the web I see a lot of people reccomending only using text links. Hmmm. Well, myself, I prefer banners! They catch my eye much better than a text link so I would guess that there must be other people like me who prefer pictures to words. Isn't a picture 'worth a thousand words'?
I'm mostly selling jewelry and I'd say that hardly anyone would buy jewelry without getting a good close up look at a pictute. Would you buy jewelry from a description? If you would you have to be in the minority!
I don't put the jewelry in the banner link. I think only beads would fit well in the average banner. But I'm more likely to click on a banner I like the look of because that company seems to me to be more likely to have products that I would like too.

Yesterday was an unexpected break from working on my link campaign. I had a power outage for some time. Can't work on the computer with a power outage! I got lots of exercise walking instead, which has to be good.

I've just started a new site selling magnetic mattress pads at dragonstonemagneticmattresses.com
I got a few mattresses in a couple of months ago and sold them on Ebay. They went down very well. Half are covered in really soft pure new Australian wool and the other half are covered in pure cotton. I had lots of comments about how people really liked them, so I decided to get more. With a lot more magnets in them this time. I was exchanging emails with someone who writes books about magnetic therapy, Fred Rinker, and he told me to have closer magnets so that the sleeper was in a north pole only zone. Apparently if the magnets are too far apart in a mattress pad the south pole leaks through around the edges of each magnet.
Here's a quote from his email "Even if you use all North pole you would still get a bipolar effect as the South Pole wil bleed up through the magnets this far apart. To achieve an all north pole magnetic field you would need to uaes at least 4 times as many magnets per pad and they should be at the bottom of a mattress pad that is at least 2" thick"

Somebody from thesupplementnetwork.com filled in the link exchange request form I have on my site for 22 different sites! Almost all for weight loss products both natural like hoodia and man made, but there are two for a seaweed supplement and one for natural mental focus pills. The sites are very new. Just days old I'd guess.
I wrote back and asked how many links max they intended to put on a page. They already had about 28 on the alternative health pages when I looked. I can't think that if I have one link among a hundred that I'll get many visitors from it.
The parent site that the email came from just has a home page - nothing else! There are some links to product, resources etc, but they don't work.
Well, natural slimming products and minerals as in seaweed tablets are definately areas I'm interested in having link exchanges in. It's all very well to use magnets to relieve pain, but it's better not to get the pain in the fist place! The man made chemicals for slimming i think I'll pass on. But I do think they need more link categories if they are going to have a lot of links. They just have 7 categories right now.

It's what I've been thinking myself too. One time I used to trust my doctor, but I don't any more. I think that the pills they give you cause more problems on the whole than the condition you were trying to fix.
It didn't use to be that way. drugs were safer, doctors were more cautious about prescribing them and would take the time to explain possible side effects. A lot of doctors wouldn't prescribe a new drug. Figured it was better to wait and see if it turned out to be safe first. And I think that the tests for new drug safety were probably carried out more carefully.
I'm sure there are some good drugs. But I don't know how I would be able to find out which were and which weren't so mostly I'm trying to avoid the whole lot.
As it is now prescription drugs are probably the main cause of death.
Techically 'The fourth leading cause of death in the U.S. is properly prescribed and administered medication. By adding improperly prescribed medication to that equation, it becomes the third leading cause of death." - but a lot of deaths due to prescription drugs don't get recorded that way. I was reading all about the Aids debacle last night. There is no HIV virus. nobody has ever been able to isolate such a thing and with modern equipment they certainly could if it was there. They can with any other virus because those viruses exist.
So then they say certain antibodies prove that someone has aids. But antibodies on their own show that someone has succesfully fought off something. Who knows what.
'Aids' is 25 different conditions that existed before the aids scare. And yes, a lot of those are caused by 'poppers' and IV drug use and other self abuse.
So we are giving 10's of thousands of people 'medication' to kill a virus that doesn't exist and the 'medication' is killing them. But it isn't written that way. They officially died of kidney failure or whatever,officially caused by aids, but it was caused by the drugs.
We know that for sure. Some place in Africa has decided to have nothing to do with those drugs. The HIV positive people there fare much better even though they are often poorly fed or even starving at times.

While I was poking around the web today I came across this site written by a Google person:

I used to be: http://dragonstonemagnetics.com/index.htm, but one time when I added another program to my site my home page didn't come up unless the 'index.htm' was typed in - the new program grabbed the http://dragonstonemagnetics.com - So I had to redo that page to 'html' instead of 'htm' so that it would show by default. I really thought that search engines would be cleverer than that. Just about any human would know that those were all the same page.
Apparantly if I knew how to do a redirect and redirected 3 of the urls to the main one things would be better. But I don't have a clue how to do that.

Today most of the sites I looked at were relevant and did have a link exchange program in place - I was lucky that way. I probably only looked at about 25 sites to get my '10 a day' link requests.
Amazing how many sites have some serious flaws. I came across one where their link page was showing in html! and two of the sites I tried to contact yesterday don't have any way to contact them - the e-mails don't work and they have no forms!
I understand about not having e-mail links - I just removed mine and replaced them with an image with my e-mail on it. The amount of junk e-mail i was getting was ridiculous. In one two hour time frame I got 26 e-mails for male enhancement products, 8 for cheap software, I'd won 2 lotteries (although I hadn't entered any!) 3 people wante to enter into a business arrangement with me so that I could collect millions of dollars from folks who had died intestate and I had 8 fake e-mails from Ebay and Paypal saying I needed to confirm my account because ... oh several things. Random check, attempted log ins form abroad - you name it.

Started late today - Ebay had a 10c listing day so I've spent about 6 hours posting items there. It's the only time I try (unsucessfully) to list everything I have for sale.

Carol from Discover Health and Wealth (My yesterday's link partner) had this comment:
"Link exchanges *can* make a difference, but the relative importance of any of these
strategies does seem to change from time to time.
Several years ago it was "meta tags". Then people abused those, the search engines stopped
placing the same degree of importance on them (with certain exceptions) and the SE started
favoring other things... like incoming QUALITY links. Of course, link farms erupted etc.
So it's always changing.
I think there will always be some relevancy with a quality link exchange program, but not necessarily the pat formula."

Actually, I think it would be a fools quest to try to woo the search engines. How could one base a business plans on their whims? I've seen plenty of high ranking sites that don't appear to have a link exchange program, so I'm not so sure that it's so relevant. But I am sure that if I find a site I like, when I'm finished looking at it I will likely follow one of their links.
